What Kind of Instructional Theory Do We Need for Instructional Technology in the 21st Century?

Franz Schott, Harriet Grzondziel, Dirk Hillebrandt

Abstract

Emerging new technologies in computer science, telecommunication or education offer a wide range of challenges to instructional technology in science and practice. Nonetheless, an integrated scientific view in form of an instructional theory for instructional technology in the 21st Century is still lacking. The authors propose a general theoretical framework to guide development of an instructional theory.

Schott et al describe their theoretical framework as serving as a basis for instructional design and evaluation procedures. They present a theoretical framework, called UCIT (Universal Constructive Instructional Theory.  Taking UCIT as a starting point, they develop theory (UCIT) and practical oriented procedures for the design and evaluation of instruction.  The article considers Instruction through the ages – what will change, what will stay the same?
