Abstract
Among
the most salient developments in electronics and computer science in the last
decade of the past century are (a) the digitalizing of both visual and auditory
information in the same digital format; (b) the rapid progress in the speed of
data processing; (c) the use of hypermedia; and (d) the electronic communication
of huge amounts of data via the Internet.
Digital
information. The
visual information that is stored in digital format comprises text, still and
motion pictures and graphics whereas the auditory information includes voice and
music. For the storage of the data the compact discs and digital video disks
were developed.
Speed
of processing.
The data are processed at very high speed and the delivery of the information,
for example by one computing system (screen and loudspeaker), is done in such an
efficient way that human beings continuously can pay attention to it, without
being distracted by a slow construction of the information on the screen.
