This discussion thread is open to comments pertaining to a Special Issue on Learning and Instructional Design, recently published in Instructional Science, July-September, 2001, Volume 29, Nos. 4-5. This special issue contains edited proceedings of an invitational conference organized by Sanne Dijkstra at University of Twente in The Netherlands.

The volume contains the following articles:

Sanne Dijkstra: The Design Space for Solving Instructional-Design Problems.

M. David Merrill: Components of Instruction Toward a Theoretical Tools for Instructional Design

Joseph M. Scandura: Structural Learning Theory -- Current Status and New Perspectives

Michiel Kuyper, Robert de Hoog & Ton de Jong: Modeling and Supporting the Authoring Process of Multimedia Simulation Based Educational Software

Frank Achtenhagen: Criteria for the Development of Complex Teaching-Learning Environments

J. Michael Spector: Philosophical Implications for the Design of Instruction

Norbert Seel: Epistemology, Situated Cognition and Mental Models -- ‘Like a Bridge Over Troubled Waters’

Jeroen J.G. van Merrienboer and Paul Kirschner: Three Worlds of Instructional design – State of the Art and Future Directions

Unfortunately, space limitations precluded publication of the conference discussion (which many find as revealing as the presentations themselves). In addition, the final paper by van Merrienboer and Kirschner was written in response to the articles and offers one perspective, with which various authors may or may not subscribe. These factors along with the importance of the topic itself make this special issue especially appropriate for on-line discussion.
